Context. The main feature of the spatial large-scale galaxy distribution is an intricate network of galaxy filaments. Although many attempts have been made to quantify this network, there is no unique and satisfactory recipe for that yet. Aims. The present paper compares the filaments in the real data and in the numerical models, to see if our best models reproduce statistically the filamentary network of galaxies. Methods. We apply an object point process with interactions (the Bisous process) to trace and describe the filamentary network both in the observed samples (the 2dFGRS catalogue) and in the numerical models that have been prepared to mimic the data.We compare the networks. The stability of a thermally stratified liquid metal flow is considered numerically. The flow is driven by the rotating magnetic field in a cylinder heated from above and cooled from below. The stable thermal stratification turns out to destabilise the flow. This is explained by the fact that a stable stratification suppresses the secondary meridional flow, thus indirectly enhancing the primary rotation. The instability in the form of Taylor-Görtler rolls is consequently promoted. It is known from earlier studies that these rolls can be only excited by finite disturbances in the isothermal flow. A new error estimate is derived for the numerical identification of a distributed parameter a(x) in a two point boundary value problem, for the case that the finite element method and the fit-to-data output-least-squares technique are used for the identifications. With a special weighted norm, we get a pointwise estimate. Prom the error estimate and also from the numerical tests, we find that if we decrease the mesh size, the maximum error between the identified parameter and the true parameter will increase. In order to improve the accuracy, higher order finite element spaces should be used in the approximations.

Abstract Oceanic lithosphere worldwide is younger than ca. 200 Myr, suggesting that it must have been globally recycled by the recurrent formation of new subduction zones since the existence of subduction on Earth. However, postulated subduction zone initiation processes remain difficult to explain in many cases, and the specific geodynamic conditions under which these might occur are still largely unknown. Validation of a Microscale Pollution Dispersal Model

The three-dimensional numerical model MISCAM (Micro Scale Air Pollution Model) has been developed to study wind flow and pollutant dispersal in densely built-up urban areas (Eichhorn, 1989). The model has been successfully applied for planning purposes by a variety of institutions in Germany. MISCAM consists of the non-hydrostatic Eulerian equations of motion and a transport equation for pollutants. Turbulence closure is carried out by means of a k-e-model. To reduce numerical diffusion errors, Smolarkiewicz and Grabowski’s (1989) scheme may be used for the calculation of advective transport. Additionally, sedimentation and dry deposition of pollutants may be taken into account.

Abstract The Deslauriers–Dubuc symmetric interpolation process can be considered as an interpolatory prediction scheme within Harten's framework. In this paper we express the Deslauriers–Dubuc prediction operator as a combination of either second order or first order differences. Through a detailed analysis of certain contractivity properties, we arrive to specific l ∞ -stability bounds for the multiresolution transform. A variety of tests indicate that these l ∞ bounds are closer to numerical estimates than those obtained with other approaches.

An integrated approach using hydrodynamic and transport numerical models, lepidochronology and stable isotope analysis was used to investigate how local hydrodynamic conditions influence the primary production and fate of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica in a Mediterranean semi-enclosed marine system (Stagnone di Marsala). The water mass exchange aptitude of different sectors of the basin was analysed, and data collected were used to select two sectors (colonized by Posidonia oceanica showing the lowest and highest water exchange values) for biological analyses.
